PEN Türkiye and five other organizations: Reject the censorship law draft!
October05,2022
Six organizations sent an alarm to the Parliament (Grand National Assembly) of Türkiye
Dear Friends -PEN Int’l, Our Advocacy and Action Groups, All PEN Centres and Members,
Six organizations in Türkiye have signed an open letter inviting the Parliament to reject the Social Media Law draft considered to be a ‘Censorship Law’:
*This law draft has been prepared without consulting (and despite the warnings of) the organizations in favour of free press. The only aim of the law draft is to block the opposition and to increase the oppression, fear and arrests in this pre-election period. We invite the Parliament to reject the draft.’
At the press conference PEN Türkiye Centre was represented by Hasan Erkul, the Journalists’ Union by İlkay Akkaya, the Journalists' Association by Sibel Güneş, the Writers’ Union by Adnan Özyalçıner, the Labour Union DİSK by Faruk Eren and The Publishers’ Union of Türkiye by Kenan Kocatürk.
Let's hope that enough members of our Parliament will side with Freedom of Expression.
